Description
Super Nova Litho. 24 x 22 by PAUL KAGAN. PAUL KAGAN was a photographer, artist, printer/publisher, activist and author. Kagan was born in Chicago in 1943, and his family moved to Los Angeles in the late 1950s. As a teenager, he was active in political protests; by the time he began college at the University of California at Berkeley, he was listed by the House Un-American Activities Committees as one of the country’s most dangerous radicals. He graduated in 1965 with a degree in history. While at UC Berkeley he learned photography, and following graduation he pursued a career as a commercial photographer, magazine art director and television news writer as well as a fine-art photographer. In the late 1960s he photographed the Monterey Pop Festival, the Human Be-In of 1967, and the People’s Park protests of 1969.
His crowning achievement, Paul Kagan published a book of photographs documenting Utopian communities in 1975 titled New World Utopias: A Photographic History of the Search for Community. The book contains photographs he took during his five years of research into Californian communities, which were both existing and ruined at the time of his visits. The collection includes images of communes from the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Fountaingrove, Llano del Rio, and the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. Yale University owns 50 boxes of his research, used to create this important book.
Kagan designed posters for 1968 Avalon Ballroom concerts. He worked with Family Dog, a production company in San Francisco run by Chet Helms and Bob Cohen, which organized concerts. In 1966 Kagan photographed Country Joe and the Fish, and the images were used on covers for albums released in 1967.
