Peddlers in the Old City, oil on masonite, 49 × 49 cm. Signature slightly faded. Framed. His oil paintings are rare and particularly sought after among collectors.David Hendler (1904–1984) was a painter and art teacher, born in Germany, who immigrated to Eretz Israel in the 1930s and became one of the key figures in laying the foundations of modern local painting. Influenced by German Expressionism and European painting traditions, Hendler developed a restrained, meditative personal language focused on figures, landscapes, and everyday scenes, characterized by a sensitive line, muted color, and an introspective gaze. Alongside his artistic practice, he was an influential teacher who shaped generations of young artists in Israel. His works were shown in major solo and group exhibitions, including at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Mishkan Museum of Art at Ein Harod. Hendler is regarded as an important figure in the early history of Israeli art, bridging European tradition with an emerging local experience.
