Description
Third of July. Oil on canvas; signed and original frame. Oil on canvas titled The Third of July; shown at the Art Station in Stone Mountain; GA; depicts two women; Annie Jefferson and Mona Reeves; seated together; draped with an American flag. The composition features a woman in a white blouse on the left and a woman in a vibrant red garment on the right; both rendered with strong tonal modeling against a landscape background featuring a white building. The title references the eve of Independence Day; adding narrative significance to the patriotic imagery. The work demonstrates Halls characteristic color sensibility and figurative skill from her Studio Incamminati training under Nelson Shanks and the Art Students League in Manhattan. The painting exhibits rich color harmonies with the red; white; and blue palette anchoring the composition; while the dual portrait format suggests themes of American identity and unity. Presented in a period gilt wood frame with ornate detail.
