Description
Rapid Transit. Mixed media on circular canvas (tondo); inscribed and unframed. Ingeniously designed to replicate the iconic circular logo of the MBTA T - Bostons Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority subway system. The circular format of the painting itself represents the famous transit logo. At the compositions center; a luminous white and silver T emerges from a deep navy-black background with an atmospheric; almost ghostly quality created through layered brushwork and varied tonal passages. Bronze-brown vertical elements flanking the T suggest subway tracks or infrastructure columns; grounding the symbol in the physical reality of the underground transit environment. A subtle blue gradient at the bottom evokes the depths of the subway system. The textured; ethereal treatment of the white T creates a sense of movement and energy - the rapid quality referenced in the title. Within this iconic symbol; the artist has subtly concealed figurative elements depicting a family riding the subway; demonstrating her characteristic blending of geometric symbolism with humanist narrative. This conceptually sophisticated work exemplifies the Boston Figurative Expressionist commitment to depicting everyday urban experience and democratic public life through bold modernist form. Artists name; title; and Boston Mass inscribed on verso. #0029 Estate Inventory Number. Authenticated by John Curuby; President of The Boston Art Club. Certificate of Authentication available upon request.
CONDITION: The painting is in good condition overall with some wear consistent with its age. The paint surface is generally stable, though close inspection reveals scattered fine surface scratches in the dark charcoal areas, particularly in the lower right quadrant. There are a few small dark spots or paint splatter marks within the silver-toned areas that appear to be original to the artist's working process. The tacking edges at the top of the circular canvas show some fraying and minor tears where the canvas wraps over the circular stretcher/support, visible in the edge detail photos. The circular backing board or stretcher shows age-related wear. The canvas is mounted to a round hardboard support with the museum school benefit sale label and artist inscriptions in red paint well preserved on the verso. Hanging wire and hardware are present and functional.
