19c Hida netsuke DARUMA by SHOZAN

Description

19th century wooden netsuke representing Daruma (founder of Zen Buddhism) enveloped in his monastic robe and holding a hossu (fly whisk). This image represents Daruma during his 9 years of continuous meditation. The netsuke is skillfully carved in ittobori (one cut) style characteristic of Hida Province. Perfectly captured facial expressions, wonderful wear, great feel of age to the piece. Signed SHOZAN on the back - the artist probably belonged to the Hida school and is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 526, number 2532). Height 1 7/16 inches.
