Description
Subject & Medium
An original oil on canvas masterpiece titled "Red & Yellow Roses”, created circa 1880s by acclaimed Scottish artist James Stuart Park (1862–1933). This Victorian-era floral still life highlights Park's signature subject- a radiant bouquet of roses, composed in vibrant tones of yellow, red, and white.
Composition & Technique
This remarkable painting captures the ephemeral grace of blooming roses, set against a deep, shadowed background that allows each petal to glow with striking intensity. Featuring a bouquet of richly colored red and golden-yellow roses, interwoven with soft white blooms and leafy green foliage, the work feels alive with natural rhythm and balance.
Park employs expressive Impressionist brushwork- loose, fluid, and intuitive- blending tone and texture to reflect both the fragility and vitality of flowers. His technique is enhanced by his use of chiaroscuro, heightening the contrast between light and shadow to make the roses appear almost three-dimensional.
This composition is more than decorative- it evokes a quiet, almost spiritual presence. The bouquet seems to rise gently from the canvas, illuminated by an unseen source of light, as if caught in a fleeting moment of stillness. This is floral painting at its most elegant and emotionally resonant.

Set in a later gilt decorative moulded frame, the painting is both protected and visually elevated. The frame complements the tonal richness of the piece and adds classical charm.
