WIGNER EUGENE: (1902-1995) Hungarian-born American theoretical physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1963. An interesting T.L.S., Eugene P Wigner, one page, 4to, New York, 20th January 1975, to Dr. David A. Marcus, on the printed stationery of The Rockefeller University. Wigner writes, in full, ´Surely, nuclear energy is neither the curse of humanity, nor is it the potential salvation of mankind. It could provide us with our energy "requirements" and could do this with less threat to our health and well-being than the other sources now available. Its use should be closely checked to avoid dangers - as should almost all large scale human activity. Whether the affluence which our energy sources support are good or bad for man is a question which you should be more qualified to judge than I am´. A strong statement by Wigner, one of the most admired physicists associated with nuclear weapons. VG
