Description
A superb association piece, a 10 x 8 in. b/w. reprint of a war-date aerial view photograph of the attack on Pearl Harbor, signed by 11 Japanese military figures who were involved in the attack: HIRATA MASUMURA (lieutenant and commander who led the first wave torpedo attack from the carrier HIRYU and is credited with dropping an 800 kilogram torpedo that struck the USS WEST VIRGINIA and the USS OKLAHOMA); MOCHITSURA HASHIMOTO (naval commander and pilot who implemented strategic maneuvers during the first wave attacks); KENNOSUKE TORISU (submarine captain of I-165, a top scorer credited with sinking two British warships and six merchantmen; also associated with the ‘human torpedo’ program at Pearl Harbor); HARUO YOSHINO (Kaga torpedo pilot); KANAME HARADA (ace who flew his Mitsubishi Zero as protective cover over the fleet during the attack, signed in Japanese only); MINORU HASEGAWA (commander of the Japanese submarine I-26 who, thirty minutes before the attack on Pearl Harbor, ordered a cannon attack on the freighter S.S. CYNTHIA OLSON, then en route to Seattle. The vessel was soon sunk with all hands, and Hasegawa won the dubious distinction of becoming the first Japanese to fire on Americans in World War II); ZENJI ORITA (torpedo officer of I-15 on picket off Pearl Harbor, also launched the first human-mounted torpedo); MITSUO FUCHIDA (officer who commanded and personally led the first wave of the attack on Pearl Harbor; he also helped develop the disastrous attack on Midway); ZENJI ABE (flew the Aichi dive bomber from the carrier Akagi); KAZUO SAKAMAKI (piloted one of the five HA-19 two-man midget subs during the attack and the only survivor of the crew of ten men); and MINORU GENDA (planner of the Pearl Harbor attack). A fabulous, probably unique combination of signatures!
