Description
(1892 - 1944) RAF Air Chief Marshal, served as a Royal Flying Corps pilot and squadron commander during the First World War. An aggressive combatant during the Battle of Britain, he carried these tactics forward to air sweeps over occupied France and replaced Sholto Douglas as head of Fighter Command in late 1942. In August 1943, Leigh-Mallory was appointed commander-in-chief of the Allied Expeditionary Air Force for the Normandy invasion. His tough tactics were praised by Montgomery, and he was posted to South East Asia Command but was killed in an air crash while en route to Burma. Very rare partly-printed World War I-date D.S. ’T. Leigh-Mallory’, 1p. legal folio, Fricourt, France, May 28, 1918, a ‘Combats in the Air’ report regarding Capt. O. E. Carter’s aerial victory over a Junker Scout over Forecourt, completed in typescript. In part: ‘Junker Scout. Double gun through propeller. Very fast…3 EA attacked formation over FRICOURT, coming from the West. 2 EA machines were engaged by observer but the other EA singled out the machine on the right and drove it down firing at it with front gun. Lt. Carter fired 200 res. at it, but the flight concluded in a long dive westwards, so the pilot dived at EA with his front gun and managed to get a burst of about 40 rounds into it. The EA was evidently hit and disappeared in a sharp dive eastwards. It was not observed to crash by pilot or observer as another EA claimed their attention, but was driven off by Observer…Probably decisive…’. Signed by Leigh-Mallory at conclusion as Major, No. 8. Squadron. File holes at left and a small bit of loss due to one close to the edge, else very good condition.
