Description
(1894 - 1987) Nazi German Deputy Fuehrer and second in command after Goering, Hess was one of Hitler's closest confidantes and friends. In an unauthorized peace mission, Hess flew a German fighter to England and surrendered, purportedly attempting to ally Germany with Great Britain against Russia. His mission, of course, failed and Hess was imprisoned at Spandau where he was found hanged in 1987. Very rare war-date A.N.S. 'R. H.' while a prisoner of the British, 1p. 24mo., on the verso of the calling card of Swiss Special Envoy and Minister Plenipotentiary WALTER THURNHEER. On the face of the card, the diplomat writes: 'With good wishes for the festive season'. On the verso, Hess notes: 'Received with a box of Cuban cigars on 12.25.1942. R.H.' Fold, with file holes grazing a few letters, else very good. Of course, virtually nothing exists signed by Hess while he was being held by the British. Thurnheer served in his position from 1940 to 1944. He served as an important go-between for Hess and his British captors.
