(1892 - 1918) 'The Red Baron', German aviator of World War I and his country's top ace with over 80 kills, he was shot down and killed by Canadian A. Roy Brown. Absolutely beautiful and very rare signed photo 'Fr[ei]h[er]r. v. Richthofen', 3.5 x 5.25 in. sepia, a chest-up image of the dashing aviator in uniform sporting his Pour le Merite about his neck, nicely signed at bottom and adding his informal rank 'Rittmeister' at bottom. Photograph by Sanke, Berlin, in very fine condition. Von Richthofen remained obscure until 1916, and he was killed just two years later. In between, he was usually in combat at the front and very few were given the opportunity to meet him, thus explaining the extraordinary rarity of his autograph material.
