For the present he desires you to superintend in this City the construction of the Ambulance waggons and medical chests already ordered for the Western Army – to instruct the contractors for the chests as to the size and number of the bottles to be placed therein, giving them required samples, and for that purpose to procure from the Medical Board in this city such samples as may be necessary – to see that the waggons & chests are constructed of a proper size to contain said bottles, and in accordance with the contracts and specifications herewith delivered to you – to make a requisition upon said Medical Board for the necessary medicines and medical stores for said chests, and after said waggons and chests are properly furnished in the prescribed time and filled, to see that they are sent to a point to be hereafter designated. You will report whenever necessary from time to time whatever is done in relation to the above matters directly to Maj. Gen. Fremont at his headquarters.’ He signs boldly ‘A.
