(1816 - 1894) Union major general who defeated Stonewall Jackson at Kernstown only to have Jackson crush his force at Cedar Mountain. War-date A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., ‘Head Quarters Second Corps d’Armee Army of Virginia’, July 17, 1862 to New York Governor Edwin D. Morgan, recommending a Pvt. William Simpson of the 9th New York Militia Regiment, who has served as a clerk on Banks’ staff, for a commission in a newly-raised New York regiment. He signs ‘N. P. Banks’ in black ink at the conclusion on the second page, adding his rank ‘M[ajor] G[eneral] C[ommanding]’. Shows original mailing folds, mildly toned at the edges and with some tape residue to the verso,. Otherwise in very good to fine condition overall.
