ULYSSES S. GRANT

Description

(1822 - 1885) Eighteenth President of the United States and Union lieutenant general. Rare, fine content manuscript D.S. as president, 2pp. approx. 10 x 15 in., Washington, Aug. 17, 1870. Grant issues a 'full and unconditional pardon' unto James Roach who had been convicted the previous December of 'illicit distilling'. Roach had been sentenced to six months' imprisonment and was fined $1,000. The document further states that two U.S. Attorneys and 'very many petitioners recommend a remission of the said fine, because said Roach has already served out his six months , has lost two sons in the late [Civil] war, is thoroughly repentant and is unable to pay the fine...' Signed by Grant (well known for his own love of spirits) at the conclusion and co-signed by Acting Secretary of State J. C. BANCOFT DAVIS (1822-1907). Folds, some traces of damping at the head of the document, else very good. Double-matted and set into a massive wood frame with glass on both sides allowing the entire document to be viewed.
