(1810 - 1886) The first person of Jewish ancestry to serve in the U.S. Congress. In 1845 he became a U.S. Senator (the first Jewish U.S. Senator, and among the first two U.S. Senators from Florida). Pro-slavery, he supported Florida's secession from the Union. At the end of the war he was imprisoned for helping Jefferson Davis attempt to escape. Rare D.S. 'D. L. Yulee President', 1p. 12mo., Fremandina, Fl., Jan. 21, 1878, an order to a New York bank to make a $400 payment to 'Hide & Leather Bank' in Chicago. A bit toned with some blurring to a few letters in signature which is also crossed by a light stamp, else very good. Matted with a photograph of Yulee and set into a silvered wood frame.
