Description
A two-piece cotton pajama-style ensemble designed by Valentino from the Spring 2016 collection, sourced from the archives of renowned collector Cameron Silver. The cotton ensemble features a deep black base covered in a vibrant, densely packed menagerie print. The motif is an imaginative and detailed design featuring creatures such as unicorns, owls, turtles, flamingos, snakes, and octopuses in a multi-color palette of white, pink, green, and deep red. The shirt is detailed with a classic pointed collar and front chest pocket. The trousers are an Italian size 52 (US size 36), and the long-sleeved button-up shirt is an Italian size 50 (US size 40). Founded by Valentino Garavani, Valentino has long been defined by the stories behind its most iconic color, red. “Valentino Red” was born when a young Garavani, sitting in an opera house in Barcelona, became captivated by a woman in a red velvet gown, an image so striking it shaped his entire design philosophy. Decades later, white took on special meaning after Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis wore a Valentino gown for her 1968 wedding, inspiring an entire collection dedicated to her.Jackie’s support and friendship helped introduce Valentino to a global audience, and her timeless style became closely linked with the brand. Together, these inspirations shaped a fashion house known for romance, elegance, and an enduring dedication to couture craftsmanship. This item highlights how naturally great tailoring works across genders. On males, the suit appears as originally intended: clean, sharp, and classic. On females, cinching the trousers at the waist and shaping the blazer creates a more sculpted, voluminous look. Displaying the looks side by side reflects what Vogue Austria writer Laia Garcia-Furtado described as “the rejection of algorithm-driven fashion trends… and a call for people to stop googling ‘how to create a personal style’ and look within.” The idea of “borrowing from the boys” isn’t new, but here it serves as a reminder that strong design is inherently unisex. One suit, two bodies, endless possibilities.
