Description
Pair of Garden Stools. Height 43cm, length 45cm, width 42cm. Used in courtyards and halls of wealthy families in Jiangnan or northern China during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, mostly custom-made garden stoneworks. Made of bluestone (or granite) with hard texture and thick patina. Crafted with round carving, relief carving and line engraving; the drum body features openwork floral reliefs (chrysanthemum, peony), with drum nail patterns on upper and lower edges imitating a leather drum, simple and grand. Mid-to-late Qing Dynasty (or Ming Dynasty). A traditional Chinese furniture piece combining practicality and decoration. Exquisitely crafted, they are important artifacts for studying Ming and Qing courtyard furnishings and stone carving art; preserved as a pair, they are especially precious.
