Description
Hotan Jade Owl. Length 5cm, width 5cm, weight 50g. Hongshan Culture or Shang-Zhou period, used for ritual or decoration. Hotan yellow jade with natural reddish-brown infiltration. Adopting "bas-relief" and "concave grinding" techniques; the owl (strigiformes) has a concise shape, prominent eyes and folded wings, strong lines conforming to the prehistoric to Shang-Zhou jade style of "spiritual resemblance over physical resemblance". Neolithic to Shang-Zhou period. Jade owls are important carriers of "divine bird worship" in early Chinese jade culture; this piece with warm texture and simple craftsmanship is a core artifact for studying prehistoric jade making and religious beliefs.
