Description
An elegant antique German porcelain covered urn produced in Bavaria around the turn of the 20th century and marked "Louis Seize." Executed in the French Louis XVI revival taste, this finely detailed vessel features sculptural gilt ram head handles, a pedestal base, and a domed finial lid.
The body is decorated with a rich celadon green ground and elaborate raised gilt ornamentation surrounding hand-painted portrait and floral medallions. The central reserve depicts a romantic pastoral court figure rendered with soft shading and delicate brushwork, confirming hand painting rather than transfer decoration. Multiple firings were used to achieve the enamel work and heavy gold embellishment.
Originally created as part of a mantel garniture set for display in formal parlors, pieces such as this were exported to the American market as luxury decorative objects around 1890–1910.
Maker's mark present to underside: Louis Seize, Bavaria (crowned RC mark).
A beautiful standalone statement piece for a console, mantel, or vitrine and pairs beautifully with neoclassical, traditional, and modern interiors.
