Albumen stereoview photograph depicting the celebrated Russian pianist and composer Anton Rubinstein (1829–1894), shown in a formal studio portrait. The image was produced by Napoleon Sarony and issued as part of his “Stereo Celebrities” series, with imprint “680 Broadway, New York” printed on the mount. Rubinstein appears in three-quarter view wearing formal evening dress, his distinctive wavy hair framing a serious expression typical of Sarony’s dramatic portrait style.

Rubinstein was among the most prominent virtuoso pianists of the nineteenth century and the founder of the St. Petersburg Conservatory. A major figure in the development of Russian classical music, he toured extensively in Europe and the United States during the 1870s, achieving wide fame. Sarony photographed many leading performers and cultural figures of the era, and portraits from the “Stereo Celebrities” series represent some of the finest photographic likenesses of nineteenth-century public figures.
