Description
Fine George III tall case clock by noted English clockmaker John Calver (1695–1751) of Woodbridge, Suffolk, widely regarded as one of the finest makers of his time. The brass two-train time and strike movement is housed in a handsome oak case. The silvered brass break-arch dial is signed “Jn. Calver Woodbridge” and features a silvered chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and an outer Arabic minute track. The dial is further embellished with applied gilt spandrels cast with cherub masks and scrolling foliate ornament, while the dial plate is richly engraved and framed with ornate gilt decoration typical of mid-18th century English clockmaking. Fitted with an eight-day weight-driven movement striking on a bell. The oak case features a domed top with finials, descending to columns flanking either side of the movement, mounted with ormolu mounts at the upper and lower sections. The molded casework gives the clock a sense of continual motion throughout the form, and the clock rests on bracket feet. Measures approximately 79 1/2" H x 19" W x 9" D. Good condition with wear to the outer case and finials; movement will need to be serviced.
