Colored etching by Edouard Detaille (1848–1912), master of military subjects often referred to as the “semi-official artist of the French Army.” The composition depicts an Algerian officer of the French North African troops, shown in traditional attire including a distinctive blue jacket and wide white trousers. Inscribed at the lower margin “Officier Indigene De Tirailleurs Algeriens 1886,” with “Edouard Detaille 1886” below the etching. Housed in a giltwood frame. Measures approximately 22" H x 17 3/4" W. Good condition with minor discoloration consistent with age.
