LOADING SADDLE RING CARBINE. Cal. 71. NSN. These short barrel, large bore carbines were obsolete in Austria by late 1850s, thousands were imported during the Civil War. (Pritchard & Prince The Austrian M1851 Carbine, North-South Trader magazine, vol.35, No.4). These carbines in this braised bolster percussion configuration with ramrods added are wartime imports. Several well documented identified examples of both Confederate & Union are known. Union use was limited to western theaters of Missouri & Kansas. 500 of these carbines were captured on Confederate blockade runner "Nikolai I" March 21, 1863 in the Bahamas. 29.75" overall, 14.5" barrel. CONDITION: very good overall, complete & matching, good mechanics and worn rifled bore. (01-28419/JS). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.
