MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 498227. Bbl. 32 1/2". Barrel is marked on the left over chamber "VP / eagle's head / P". Chamber is marked on top "I". "R" marked Buffington rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. Blade front sight. Receiver manufacture date corresponds to the the "SWP 1890" boxed acceptance mark. Breech block is faintly marked "U.S. / MODEL / 1884". Three position tumbler. Lockplate marked with the spread wing "eagle" and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD". Walnut stock carries an encircled script "P" proof in addition to the acceptance mark. Forearm with two bands. Correct late type slotted head ramrod. Two piece trigger guard. Buttplate tang marked "U.S.". Upper band carries sling swivel and stacking swivel. CONDITION: stock set has a well-worn original finish with numerous handling marks. Scratch which resembles a crack extends rearward from breech block tang. Metal turning overall gray and patina with wear, light oxidation and scattered fine pitting. Bore has strong rifling with sharp lands, light frosting and scattered shallow pitting throughout. (01-28658/RW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
