Here’s a very popular, early Family Dog Original Handbill with a Mouse/Kelley design, produced for the weirdness that was Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band at the Avalon Ballroom. Artist Don Van Vliet, AKA Captain Beefheart, had a powerful and unique voice. He blended various musical styles with an experimental approach. This handbill utilizes an illustration from late 19th-century German cartoonist Heinrich Kley and is truly striking. Knowledgeable collectors know that early Family Dog material is many times rarer than the Fillmore series. As such, handbills like this one are highly sought after whenever offered at public sales.
