Description
Seventh Crusade period, (1248-54) See Arms and Armor of the Crusading Era, Nicolle, fig.84 for a comparable example excavated at Ras Castel Serbia. Just over 3 5/8" length, well forged iron with thickened medial, slightly rounded edged barbed point. Rectangular section bolster and butted seam conical socket. The javelin was used, thrown from horseback. If it hit its mark, the attack was successful. If stopped by a shield, it would impale, pulling the shield from the owner's hand or at least making it difficult to control. Stable excavated condition with the surface textured from burial.
