Boxwood netsuke of mother kirin standing above its young. Superb carving to the last detail with absolutely great faces and realistic rich hairwork. Clever composition with dynamic postures, perfectly captured mood of the scene, eyes are double inlaid with light and dark horn, excellent patina. Signed GARYU (awakening dragon) in oval reserve with round seal MISHU for Bishu - one of the best 20th century netsuke carvers. For discussion see CONTEMPORARY NETSUKE by Miriam Kinsey, pages 162 and 214. Fantastic sculpture, all that a great netsuke shall be. Height 2.06 inches.
