Netsuke KAPPA by HASHINE

Description

1960s netsuke of a kappa on a rock, unusually well molded and carved plastic with horn inlaid eyes. Kappas are mythical river goblins with the body of a tortoise, the limbs of a frog, and the head of a monkey with a hollow on the top of their head which contains a fluid that gives the animal its strength. Kappas are very ferocious but are also extremely polite, so in case of a sudden encounter, a proven method to disarm it is to bow - it bows in response thus spilling the liquid that gives them strength. Beautiful color material, superb face, in excellent condition, signed HASHINE on the bottom, which is also unusual for a plastic netsuke. Length 1.36 inches.
