Jerome Remick in his eponymous catalogue notes the existence of two varieties i.e. one with "very thin numbers in the date " and the other where the "numbers in the date are thicker." It is likely that the coins observed with thinner dates are early strikes from fresh dies. It is noted that the coin on offer in our sale has particularly sharp detail, a partial wire rim and die polish marks indicative of an early specimen strike.
