Fine early 'Ramu' Feast Bowl, Papua New Guinea. Carved and engraved hardwood and natural pigments. Old burnished wood food-feasting ceremonial bowl with crocodile handles from the Lower Ramu River of Papua New Guinea. These ornamental feasting and ceremonial bowls are used on special occasions to serve pudding known as “Pollom' and Yams. Not only is this style of bowl is used during ceremonial village feasts, it is an essential part of the traditional price paid for the bride.
