A signed card and telegram from Clive Davis to The Grateful Dead (dated Winterland Theater, 10/18/1974), with a note from a gift basket he sent to them at Nassau Coliseum.
The card reads: "Grateful Dead, This is just the end of the beginning. You will resume at the top and go on from there. Love to all of you. Clive Davis."
The note is from Gourmet and Gifts gift basket (sent from 153 W. 57th Street to Nassau Coliseum). Handwritten on the back: "you guys are ill. I have to stay away ? the album is getting no response - I hate you all - Love - Clive Davis."
The only "suit" the Grateful Dead trusted (according to Bob Weir), Davis played a significant role in the commercial success of the band in the late 1970s into the 1980s, signing them to Arista and helping them translate their magical improvisations into a studio format. The Dead appreciated his strategic mind and musical insights, achieving their biggest hit with "Touch of Grey" in 1987 under Davis' guidance.
