Description
A finely hand-knotted Caucasian tribal prayer rug, likely originating from the Shirvan / Kuba weaving region (Azerbaijan area), featuring a classic mihrab (prayer niche) design rendered in bold geometric form. The composition centers on a stepped, rectilinear mihrab arch, framed by stylized column elements and flanked by highly angular Tree of Life–type vegetal motifs, a hallmark of Caucasian tribal symbolism. The saturated madder red field is complemented by ivory, soft green, and deep indigo accents, creating strong visual contrast and excellent decorative presence. The border system displays repeating geometric cartouches and latch-hook-derived motifs typical of Shirvan and Kuba village weavings, reinforcing the regional attribution. No holes or repairs, and very soft. This rug was acquired from a Central Virginia estate and was woven in the 1930s. Clean and ready to be enjoyed.
