late 19th century, 235 x 201 cm, Central Asia, middle Amu Darya valley
REUBEN, DAVID M., Gols And Guls II. London 2001, no. 12 *** RIPPON BOSWELL, A 66, 19 November 2005, lot 173
A main carpet woven by the Chub Bash, who belong to the large ethnic group of the Ersari. The red field presents seven horizontal rows of three octagonal temirjin guls each. The secondary motifs placed between the large guls are the most interesting feature of the carpet. In addition to diamonds, hooked diamonds and octagons, two horses, one amulet, one camel carrying a bridal litter and a water jug can be discerned at the centre of the field, suggesting that it served as a wedding carpet.
