second half 19th century, 286 x 164 cm, Central Asia, middle Amu Darya valley
LEFEVRE, JEAN & PARTNERS, Central Asian Carpets. London 1976, no. 20
RIPPON BOSWELL, A 34, 16 November 1991, lot 93
Three large nested diamonds with a small tree at their centres form the vertical central axis in the field of this Beshir. Nested diamonds of similar size are aligned at the sides in an offset arrangement. Wide red diagonal bands are placed between them as dividing spaces. The main border design consists of rectangular compartments in diverse colours that enclose a star device. Two saffron guard borders decorated with vine designs create a contrast to the blues and reds of the field, appearing like a distinct frame.
