Black felt regulation Hardee, or slouch hat, with a green 4th Division, 19th Corps cloth badge on the left side, an embroidered wreath on the front, gold hat cords, with three rows of stitching on the brim, brown leather sweatband marked "REGULATION/U.S./ARMY HAT" with a small remnant of a paper label, with a tag marked "PHILIP S. HOLMES/CO. K, 26TH MAINE,/FROM/Doug Richardson/herb Hough of/Charles St. Trading Post/99 Charles St. Boston/TEL. (617) 523-9390".
Note: Philip S. Holmes was a member of Company K, 26th Maine Infantry. There is a biography written by him in the 26th Maine regimental history in which he mentions some of his experiences including a pet squirrel he had with him during his service (pp. 352-358).
