Description
This pair of authentic prehistoric artifacts represents the "Full-Grooved Maul" tradition of North American lithic technology. The larger specimen is carved from Banded Gneiss, a metamorphic rock prized for its toughness and striking visual layers, typically sourced from the Northern Great Plains. The smaller, darker specimen is crafted from dense Basalt, featuring a deeper, more refined hafting groove often seen in the Columbia River or Great Lakes regions. Both tools show excellent evidence of ancient manufacture, including meticulous "pecking" marks within the grooves and secondary "use-wear" flattening on the striking poles. Condition is remarkably solid for their age, showing expected surface abrasions, minor mineral encrustations, and old percussion scars that confirm their history as heavy-duty utility tools. L 5", W 3.25", D 3.25" and L 3.75", W 3.25", D 3.25". Please see photos.
