Description
This striking Plains-style pipe bag, likely from the early to mid-20th century, is a testament to the enduring craftsmanship of the Lakota and neighboring Great Plains tribes. Hand-constructed from brain-tanned suede, the bag features a central "Morning Star" and cross motif—a design that beautifully blends traditional celestial symbolism with historic missionary influence. The beadwork is executed in white, light blue, and pink glass seed beads, with a unique scalloped beaded top edge and long, hand-cut fringe at the base that remains remarkably supple. This piece is in excellent vintage condition; the suede displays a rich, honest patina with minor surface darkening commensurate with age, and the beadwork is exceptionally well-preserved, with only a single loose thread visible at the upper scalloped edge. H 21", W 4.75", D 0.5". Please see photos for condition.
