Fine military content, war-date A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., Washington, D.C., Nov. 20, 1862, to New York Governor Edwin D. Morgan, a glowing recommendation letter for a fellow New York officer, in full: ‘I take great pleasure in recommending Capt Henry G Tuthill of the 104th Regt as a gallant officer, efficient, subordinate and brave. He has been engaged in the following battles, Rappahannock, Bull Run, Chantilly, Thoroughfare Gap, South Mountain, and Antietam, the latter engagement the Captain was severely wounded and lost several of his fingers. I take especial interest in his welfare and promotion because I have witnessed his courage upon the field of battle, and know him to be a reliable office, and it affords me much gratification to present him this my recommendation.’ He signs very boldly ‘A. Duryee’ in black ink at the conclusion, adding a post-script explaining that Tuthill was senior captain of his regiment at the time of its colonel’s promotion but was on leave due to his wounds, signed again with his initials ‘A. D.’ Shows original mailing folds with a minor split thereto at the top edge of the second page, with the two sheets of the letter separated, otherwise in very good condition overall.
