Description
(1831-1903) Union major general whose career was damaged because of his participation in the rout at Chickamauga. Probably war-date A.L.S. 1p. 4to., ‘Hd Qrs 2nd Regt O.V.L.’, Chattanooga, Aug. 24, [n.y.], to a correspondent whose name McCook has crossed out, in part: ‘…Upon my return to-day from an unsuccessful hunt after a party of ‘raiders,’ I found your letter, requesting an autograph note from myself. Knowing your success in securing notes from the most distinguished men of our land, I feel the compliment conferred upon me, by having one from me placed in the same collection. I attribute the request however, entirely to our personal friendship and not flatter myself that compliance will at al add to the value of your book. Remember me to your Father and Mother…’. Loss at bottom left professionally repaired, inlaid into a larger sheet, very good. Offered with a CDV-sized albumen portrait, also inlaid.
