Description
(1813 - 1891) Union admiral who received the surrenders of Forts Jackson and St. Philip, and was indispensable in the siege and subsequent Union victory at Vicksburg. Good association manuscript L.S., 1p. 4to., Washington, D.C., March 22, 1869, to future rear admiral John Grimes Walker, instructing him to report to the New York Navy Yard to inspect the frigate USS SABINE for use as a training ship. He signs boldly in black ink at the conclusion . The letter is endorsed as received and forwarded at top left by NAPOLEON B. HARRISON (1823-1869), who commanded the gunboat USS CAYUGA as it spearheaded the assault on Forts Jackson and St. Phillip, resulting in the capture of New Orleans by forces under David G. Farragut. The verso is further endorsed by rear admiral SYLVANUS GODON (1809-1879) as commandant of the Navy Yard, confirming that Walker reported as ordered, and again by Harrison below, reporting that Walker later returned to his post at the Naval Academy. Shows original mailing folds, otherwise in fine condition.
