Description
(1830-1907) Confederate brigadier general who served at Second Bull Run, Antietam, Bentonville, and was severely wounded in the arm during the Confederate retreat after the Battle of Gettysburg. Interesting partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., [Suffolk, VA, n.d.], an application for membership in the Suffolk chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy, completed by a Mrs. Missouri Taylor Withers, wife of Austin Withers of the 39th Virginia Cavalry Battalion, ‘On Scout duty at the time of Surrender & never Surrendered’. Signed ‘L S Baker’ in black ink at bottom, providing a recommendation for membership, adding his rank ‘Brig Genl Cavalry C S A’. Shows original folds with approx 1 in. splits thereto at the edges, otherwise in very good condition overall.
