Description
(1822-1878) Union brigadier general of cavalry whose command distinguished itself in bold maneuvers at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Brandy Station, and delayed Jubal Early’s push towards Gettysburg on the first day of the battle. Scarce, war-date partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 4to., Sandy Hook, MD, Oct. 4, 1862, a requisition for forage for the horses of of the 6th Regiment, New York Cavalry. He signs ‘Thos. C. Devin’ in black ink approving the requisition, adding his contemporary rank ‘Col 6th Regt. N Y Cavy.’ Shows vertical folds with slight splits thereto, with some foxing along the bottom edge, otherwise in very good overall condition.
