(1824-1865) Confederate major general, served under General Joseph E. Johnston as chief engineer of the Army of the Shenandoah, nearly demoted for criticizing his superiors. Division commander during the Seven Days Battles, he was later assigned to command the defenses of Petersburg, and commanded the Wilmington District against Terry’s 1864 campaign. Wounded and captured during the Second Battle of Fort Fisher, he died of dysentery in a Union prison. Rare A.E.S. ‘W. H. C.
