In full: ‘The Raritan & Delaware Bay Railroad Company are constantly conveying troops for the Government over the line of their railroad recently opened from here to Camden [New Jersey]. As efforts are being made by parties opposed to this Company to interrupt their line of communication, which if successful would create much practical embarrassment in the forwarding of troops it would in my judgment be advisable for the Department to order the Company to hold itself in readiness to transport such troops as may be required under the direction of proper officers.’ Shows original mailing folds with minor splits thereto at the edges, very faintly toned at the edges, otherwise in very good to fine condition. The letter likely refers to a legal challenge raised by the Camden and Amboy Railroad, which asserted that the Raritan & Delaware Bay Railroad Company’s line across New Jersey violated their state-authorized monopoly. The Camden and Amboy Railroad proved unable to handle the traffic demands of the Civil War, and their competitor offered a valuable alternative, transporting 17,500 U.S. troops during the course of the war.
