Description
(1837-1892) Union brigadier general and Medal of Honor recipient, a brilliant cavalry leader who fought with distinction at Gettysburg on the third day, and repulsed Stuart's cavalry at the Battle of Hanover. Good content and association A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Burlington, VT, April 15, 1889, to fellow officer and historian Henry M. Cist, in part: ‘…I have not seen Gen [Henry V.] Boynton’s letters on the Battle of Chicamauga [sic], shall be much pleased to receive a copy of same. Am not able to give you address of Col Chas B Stoughton [commander of the 4th Vermont Infantry], he seems to have dropped out of sight.’ He signs boldly in black ink at the conclusion. Shows original mailing folds, very faintly toned, shows some damp stains to Cist’s address at upper left and a tiny loss to the bottom right corner, otherwise in very good overall condition.
