Description
General Anthony 'Nuts' McAuliffe (1898-1975), known for his one-word response 'NUTS' to German surrender demands at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. After Bastogne, McAuliffe was promoted to Major General and given command of the 103rd Infantry Division, nicknamed the 'Cactus Division,' after the unit shoulder patch. Signed and inscribed original period WWII 8x10-inch b/w photograph of McAuliffe in uniform as commander of the Division, signed in black fountain pen: 'To Stephen Bumball, fellow Cactusman with warm regards A. C. McAuliffe, Maj. Gen US Army.' Matted and framed. From the estate of Stephen W. Bumball (1919-2005), a WWII First Lieutenant and US Army intelligence officer in the 103rd Infantry Division (Cactus Division), 307th CIC Detachment, and interrogator in the 970th CIC Det. He was a noted collector of military autographs and relics. This auction includes a selection of autographs and relics from his personal collection.
