Details:
George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland, autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated November 11, 1847, on Admiralty stationery. Written during his tenure as First Lord of the Admiralty, the letter concerns arrangements for the movement of a naval vessel between Woolwich, Portsmouth, and Devonport, including the transportation of plants. Signed "Auckland" at the conclusion.
Eden thanks his correspondent for assistance already provided and discusses the anticipated sailing schedule of the vessel, noting that she will probably leave Woolwich around the 20th and Portsmouth around the 25th. He advises that the plants would be best placed aboard at Portsmouth and offers to meet again to discuss the arrangements.
An interesting piece of British naval correspondence reflecting Eden's direct involvement in Admiralty affairs during the early Victorian period.
The letter measures approximately 4.25 x 7 inches folded, handwritten on two adjoining sheets. Fine condition with light age toning, original folds, and minor handling wear.
George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland (1784–1849) was a British statesman and colonial administrator who served as Governor-General of India from 1836 to 1842 and twice as First Lord of the Admiralty, from 1834 to 1835 and again from 1846 until his death. His administration in India was marked by the First Anglo-Afghan War, a disastrous British military campaign that culminated in the retreat from Kabul in 1842. Returning to Britain, Eden resumed his political career and was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty under Lord John Russell. The city of Auckland, New Zealand, was named in his honor in 1840.
