Charles "Chuck" Yeager (1923–2020) was an American military aviator, World War II fighter ace, and pioneering test pilot. On October 14, 1947, Yeager made aviation history by becoming the first pilot to exceed the speed of sound in level flight, flying the experimental Bell X-1 rocket-powered aircraft, nicknamed "Glamorous Glennis," over the Mojave Desert in California.
During World War II, Yeager flew P-51 Mustang fighters and was credited with 11.5 aerial victories. He later served as a test pilot and continued his distinguished career in the United States Air Force, retiring as a brigadier general in 1975. His historic achievements helped usher in the supersonic age of aviation and made him one of the most celebrated pilots in American history.
