Fred Haise (born 1933) is an American astronaut, test pilot, and aerospace engineer best known for serving as Lunar Module Pilot aboard NASA's Apollo 13 mission in April 1970. Alongside James Lovell and Jack Swigert, Haise survived a catastrophic oxygen tank explosion that forced the cancellation of the planned lunar landing. The crew's successful return to Earth became one of the most celebrated rescue operations in the history of space exploration. Haise later participated in the Space Shuttle program, piloting the Enterprise during its approach and landing tests in 1977.
