Lanceolate Hermit
Item Details
Description
  • Print: Glaucis Lanceoalota (Lanceolate Hermit)
  • First Edition
  • By: John Gould
  • From: The Birds of Australia
  • Publishing: London, 1849
  • Medium: Hand colored Lithograph
  • Size: 14 x 20 inches

Most likely from an edition of A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds, published by J. Gould, London. Commonly called Constant's Star-Throats or Plain-Capped Starthroats, they are expertly hand-colored and finely detailed. What distinguishes this lithograph are the dramatic highlights of the dazzling luminescent red-throat that scales down their necks. In addition, the lovely green coloring of their backs contrasts nicely with their grey undersides and also includes white accenting and black wingtips. Each has white eyebrows with lines coming off their black beaks. Fine and exact lines define and detail every part of these birds bodies, and the precise positioning in flight lets the viewer fully appreciate the lovely coloring. Auction prices of this outstanding 19th century Gould print have risen dramatically in the past five years.

Please note that this lot has a reserve. When you leave a bid in advance of the auction, submit your maximum.
